There is Irish on my grandmother’s side, but we do not really have any traditions or celebrate that part of our heritage.
The kids were celebrating at school last week of course and since they are on their spring break this week I thought I better head to Pinterest and round up some crafts to do.
I loved the idea of talking about being “lucky” and relating that to God’s blessings to us.
We did these 3 “lucky” St Patrick’s day crafts.
The first one inspired from Happy Home Fairy is a treasure pot, where you glue your gold coins (treasures to your pot). This is such a great idea to get your kids thinking about what things in their life they consider to be treasured.
We did something similar at Thanksgiving with our thankful tree craft. I think the more we can get our kids talking about their blessings the happier they will be.
Head to her blog linked above for the original craft. We followed her steps but made a few changes for my glitter loving girls, we also added a tissue paper rainbow since this craft didn’t take much time!

- Using black construction paper, cut out a pot shape
- Using Yellow Construction Paper cut out small yellow circles for coins. Use a small cup or a larger water bottle lid (any thing you can finsh circular will do the trick) and have your kids trace the circles before cutting the coins. My kids loved that step.
- Write things you and your kid’s treasure
- Cover the coins with gold glitter glue.
- Glue the coins to the pot
- Using a Gold Pen or a Chalk Pencil write out your child’s name on the pot with the word treasures after it.
- Then we made tissue paper rainbows (small squares of coloured tissue paper scrunched and glued onto a blank piece of construction paper) and glued the treasure pot at the end of the rainbow.
We were able to talk about the rainbow and how God gave that us a sign of His promise. We also discussed the verses Matthew 6: 19-21 19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
The next craft I saw on the What I have learned blog. It is an “I am lucky because” shamrock. You can purchase her printable for $3.75 on her site if you would like.
We opted to make our own shamrocks out of green construction paper. It is quite simple. You just have to fold a paper in half then fold it again and cut out a heart just leaving the very tip of the corner fold connected.
Open it up and you have a perfect 4 leaf clover!
- Cut out your shamrock.
- Cut out a stem and write out “I am lucky because” Glue it down.
- Glue down the centre only of your shamrock with a glue stick.
- Under each leaf of your 4 leaf clover have your child/help your child write out 4 reasons they are lucky!
- Have them decorate it however they want!
The third craft we did was a rainbow craft. The idea was inspired by the Just Reed
- Cut out a big cloud shape and have your child write/help your child write on it “If I found the leprechaun’s pot of gold I would…”
- Cut out strips in all the colour’s of the rainbow using construction paper
- On each strip have your child write/help your child write out their ideas on how they would spend that money (remind them about thinking about others and not spending it all in their wants)
- Glue each strip to the bottom of the cloud note* depending on the age of the child, have them cut out the strips in an arch shape or if they are younger just have them cut the strips straight. Both look cute. Of course, if they are really little you might want to cut out the strips yourself! We folded ours into an accordion style so they jumped off the page!
All these crafts are a great way to discuss thankfulness, blessings and treasures.
